Abstract

A low cost method is described for preparing magnetic recording test diskettes by deliberately introducing "missing" bits and extra bits into the diskette in known areas. These diskettes with known level errors are used as standards to measure the performance of diskette testers.

Low Cost Fabrication Method for Standard Error Diskettes

A low cost method is described for preparing magnetic recording test diskettes by deliberately introducing "missing" bits and extra bits into the diskette in known areas. These diskettes with known level errors are used as standards to measure the performance of diskette testers.

Missing bits are created by applying a very small thin drop of clear lacquer on the diskette surface resulting in a raised 10-30 microinch layer. The physical separation of the head from the recorded surface will cause a loss of signal strength.

Extra bits are created by scratching the surface with abrasive tape to give a known depth of abrasion (approximately 30 microinch). The fine scratches are detected by an increased amplitude in the recorded signal.
