Abstract

Laser arrays for multi-channel optical recording are provided in which beams from different laser cavities focus into beams of different shapes. A specific example includes the generation of an elongated erase beam for use in phase change optical recording. This can be accomplished, for example, through the selective modification of the laser cavity in order to change the field light distribution, that is, the resultant focused image on an optical disk. Another example is where one independently optimizes one laser for writing, i.e., to have the maximum optical efficiency through the optical system, and another laser for reading purposes, i.e., with a minimum focused spot size.
