Dod Ink System

An ink system for an ink jet drop-on-demand (DOD) printer is shown in which the print head is designed for easy replacement due to the use of quick disconnect connectors for the electrical connections and the ink supply lines.

The ink system includes an ink reservoir 1 from which ink of one or more colors is supplied through suitable tubes to a fixed mounted interface 3. The interface 3 includes electrical and ink supply connections oriented so that one action will connect the print head (not shown) to the ink supply by means of complementary interface 2. Interface 3 comprises an electrical connect which utilizes standard male-female pairs with interface 2 to make appropriate electrical connections and a quick disconnect valve 5 for each of the ink lines 6 to the print head. The lower figure shows a partial section view which includes one quick disconnect valve. The valve includes a ball valve 7 in both interface members 2, 3 and the ball valve is biased to the closed position by spring member 8.
