Abstract

A method is described to take a workstation offline from the host computer without ending a data communication session. With existing communication protocols, it is impossible to disconnect a workstation from a host mainframe computer without aborting the active session between the two machines. But if the workstation is a Personal Computer (PC) capable of performing useful work in stand- alone mode, it would be desirable to permit temporary disconnection from the host, with the assumption that the session with the host will remain intact and may be reconnected after the local workstation completes its local task. This is immediately possible if the workstation is attached to the mainframe via a passthru program running in another computer, e.g.

Method to Temporarily Disconnect the Workstation From a Host

A method is described to take a workstation offline from the host computer without ending a data communication session. With existing communication protocols, it is impossible to disconnect a workstation from a host mainframe computer without aborting the active session between the two machines. But if the workstation is a Personal Computer (PC) capable of performing useful work in stand- alone mode, it would be desirable to permit temporary disconnection from the host, with the assumption that the session with the host will remain intact and may be reconnected after the local workstation completes its local task. This is immediately possible if the workstation is attached to the mainframe via a passthru program running in another computer, e.g., an IBM System/370 connected to an IBM Personal Computer via passthru on an IBM 5520. The technique requires that the host session be maintained by the passthru machine while the workstation is disconnected. The method is as follows: 1. The workstation requests permission to detach from the passthru device. 2. The passthru device completes any pending business with the workstation, and gives permission to detach to the workstation. 3. The workstation enters local mode and performs whatever function is required. The passthru device responds to any host- directed inquiry to the detached workstation as if that workstation were still online, but idle. The completion...
