Gear Train Pinch Point Eliminator

A rubber or elastomer bumper effects improved safety by blocking, or eliminating, the pinch point where two mating gears mesh.

The figure shows the installed position of bumper 1 relative to two mating gears 2 and 3. It is apparent that the bumper effectively prevents fingers or other objects from being drawn into the pinch point where the gears mesh. By virtue of its elasticity it does not create new pinch points between itself and the gears, as would occur with a rigid bumper.

The bumper is designed with a tapered barb 4 on its lower end so that it is easily "popped" into, and retained in, an approprately located hole in the mounting surface.
