Abstract

In the contact-type image scanner for recognizing printed media, such as bills or paper money, two cylindrical lenses are arranged to sandwich a SELFOC* lens array. This enables the amount of effective light to be increased, so that the sensitivity of the scanner can be raised. The SELFOC lens is an optical glass fiber with self-focusing ability and serves to create an equivalent image. When both of the cylindrical lenses 1 and 2 are same, they act as condenser lenses to increase the effective light amount. The symmetrical arrangement of the cylindrical lenses with respect to the SELFOC lens array can reduce the optical distortion of the image effected inherently to the single cylindrical lens. (a) For increasing the sensitivity, the two cylindrical lenses are arranged symmetrically with respect to the SELFOC lens array.
