Abstract

A method is described which permits operators of interactive text processing systems to key in text while the system is in cursor draw mode. In DisplayWrite 3*, a cursor draw function has been introduced during text edit. One of the functions supported during cursor draw is the ability to do text entry even while in this keying mode. When the operator initiates cursor draw by pressing CTL+F5, the system posts the cursor draw command line. The options on this command line are as follows: Draw_with_cursor Erase_with_cursor Change_draw_character The first command is initially shown in reverse-video. The system initially defaults the draw character to be "lines." This enables the operator to draw lines during text edit. A good example would be to draw boxes around text.

If the operator then selects the "Draw_with_cursor" option, the system will initiate cursor draw using the active cursor draw character. While in this special keying mode, the following cursor motion keys perform the cursor draw function: cursor right/left and cursor up/down. In DisplayWrite 3, the operator may also insert text graphics/ numerics/symbols while in this mode. The operator is not forced to exit the cursor draw keying mode to key in graphics. The operator may also make use of the Delete and Backspace key to delete either the current or previous character position.
