Abstract

The set of SNA commands responsible for the general management of the network is Network Services. Network Services is divided into categories, one of which is Maintenance Services. As a part of Maintenance Services, IBM PC Network SNA 3270 Emulation Program supports the Request Maintenance Statistics (REQMS) and Record Formatted Maintenance Statistics (RECFMS) commands from the host. When the REQMS specifies type 2 Maintenance statistics, it is requesting that a RECFMS be generated with a count of the number of Program Checks (errors in SNA data traffic) that have occurred in the network at the devices attached to the control unit. On IBM PC Network SNA 3270 Emulation, the Gateway is the control unit, and it receives the REQMS request for type 2 statistics from the host.

Handling of SNA Request Maintenance Statistics Command

A method of collecting the Program Check error counts from the Network Stations is described. The approach used for collecting Program Check error counts from the Network Stations attached to the Gateway is for the Gateway to broadcast the REQMS command it receives to each of the attached Network Stations. Even though the Network Stations are essentially Logical Unit (LU) devices, each has a pseudo Physical Unit (PU) layer which can process the REQMS command. Each network Station generates a separate RECFMS containing its total Program Check error count. The Gateway collects the error counts and creates a RECFMS with the total error count an...
