Abstract

An arrangement is described for the IBM PC Network SNA 3270 Emulation Program to provide the gateway station with the ability to act as a display or printer as well as a 3274 control unit. IBM PC Network SNA 3270 Emulation Program is a program product which emulates a 3274 Control Unit with a 3278/3279 display and a 3287 printer. It connects to the host using a Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC) communications facility and sends/receives data using the Systems Network Architecture (SNA) protocol. The program product can be configured to run on the IBM Personal Computer (PC) Network. For this configuration, one station called a "Gateway" emulates the 3274 Control Unit and communicates directly with the host, using SDLC.

Use of Emulated Control Unit Also As a Network Station

Other PC stations called Network Stations connect to the "Gateway" and communicate with the host through the gateway. An actual 3274 Control Unit functions only as a control unit and cannot function as a display terminal. If the IBM PC Network SNA 3270 Emulation "Gateway" functioned like the actual 3274, it could not be used as a display device. This is undesirable. In the new arrangement, the IBM PC Network SNA 3270 Emulation Program provides the "Gateway" operator with the option of configuring the PC "Gateway" with a Network Station in it. If the PC "Gateway" is configured with a Network Station, it can emulate a 3278/3279 and a 3287 printer. This allows the PC "Gateway" to be used just li...
