Abstract

A method is described which provides a tool to interpret, format, and print or display data from IBM Personal Computer (PC) Network SNA 3270 Emulation trace files. The IBM PC Network SNA 3270 Emulation program provides the ability to trap and save all SNA Path Information Units (PIUs), sent or received, to an operator-specified file. This information may then be used to analyze communication problems. These SNA Path Information Units are variable-length structured fields with coded sub-fields which are very difficult to follow if presented in an unformatted manner. The Trace Analyzer tool separates and presents individual SNA PIUs as separate paragraphs, and leading fixed-length fields common to each PIU are at a fixed indent level.

SNA Communications Trace Analyzer

Additionally, certain coded sub- fields, which are important to trace analysis, are decoded and presented using alphabetic characters or symbols common to SNA jargon. This tool is a BASIC program which is supplied on the PC Network 3270 program diskette. The tool reads unformatted trace data from a file on a diskette and separates it into readable parts. These parts consist of SNA PIUs. The PIU is a record of SNA data which is sent from the PC to the host computer or received at the PC from the host computer. The Trace Analyzer interprets that trace data and marks the data as being sent from the PC or received at the PC. In the same way, it identifies and marks (1) the SNA command type, (2) the SNA co...
