Abstract

A method is described which permits the IBM PC Network SNA 3270 Emulation Program product to be used to communicate with the Series 1 system. PC Network 3270 is a software package which allows the personal computer to emulate a 3274 control unit with an attached 3278 display and a 3287 printer in varying configurations facilitating stand-alone and Network operation. This product attaches to a host, using SDLC/SNA protocols. The configurability and communications capabilities of PC Network 3270 make it usable and adaptable to many situations. The use of PC Network 3270 as the PC's communications base is presently not available for an IBM Series 1. A way to replace the SDLC capabilities on PC Network 3270 with their Series 1/PC 'connect' code to allow communications between the PC and Series 1 is described.

Series 1/PC Connect Interface

This additional code is merged with the PC Network 3270 product already in the field. The PC Network 3270 must be able to detect in which system environment the product is operating. A separate data set built on all PC Network 3270 disks is the method by which a new Series 1/PC Connect product can be brought into coexistence. The Series 1/PC Connect product, when used on the PC Network 3270, will replace the 'dummy' data set with the actual data set using an installation program provided with the Series 1/PC Connect package. The 'dummy' data set released with the PC Network 3270 program always indicates during initialization that th...
