Abstract

A braking system for a reel of a tape cartridge includes a release button held by a compression spring against the hub of the reel. Serrations on the release button match serrations in the reel hub to prevent rotation. The reel hub includes a metallic plate for connection to a drive magnet. In the figure, the tape reel 1 is shown with the brake removed and the reel held for driving by a drive assembly 2 which includes a magnet 3. The reel 1 is shown mounted within a tape cartridge 4. The braking system includes a release button 5 which is being held away from contact with the hub 6 of the reel 1 by an extending section 7 of the drive assembly 2. A compression spring 8 is shown in compression in the figure and operates to hold the release button 5 against the hub 6 of reel 1.

Cartridge Reel Brake

A braking system for a reel of a tape cartridge includes a release button held by a compression spring against the hub of the reel. Serrations on the release button match serrations in the reel hub to prevent rotation. The reel hub includes a metallic plate for connection to a drive magnet. In the figure, the tape reel 1 is shown with the brake removed and the reel held for driving by a drive assembly 2 which includes a magnet 3. The reel 1 is shown mounted within a tape cartridge
4. The braking system includes a release button 5 which is being held away from contact with the hub 6 of the reel 1 by an extending section 7 of the drive assembly 2. A compression spring 8 is shown in compression in the figure and operates to hold the release button 5 against the hub 6 of reel 1. Serrations 9 are provided around the lower diameter of the release button 5 and the upper diameter of the hub 6. These matching serrations 9 prevent the rotation of the reel when the cartridge 4 is taken out of the drive. In operation, when the cartridge 4 is out of the drive system, the release button 5 is held against the hub 6 of the reel 1 by the compression spring 8. The release button 5 is prevented from rotation by an extension 10 fastened to the under side of the top of the cartridge 4. The release button 5 through the serrations 9 prevents the reel 1 from rotating until the cartridge 4 is placed into a drive system. When the cartridge 4 is inserted into a drive s...
