Abstract

In a communication controller having clustering/multiplexing capability for other communication controllers, the customer must be able to perform the problem determination and the failure isolation from the machine provided with the clustering/multiplexing capability and must not take actions from the other machines. This article describes a method to perform these functions in this environment. The time division multiplex (TDM) functions are packaged in the base communication controller (CC) box, and a group of other communication controller boxes may use the bandwidth of the high speed line. The communication controller in which is packaged the TDM functions can use two lines at 256 kilobits per second and up to four controllers can be connected to the first one using one line at 256 kilobits per second (as an example).

To allow the problem determination and the failure isolation to be performed by the customer from the machine equipped with the TDM functions without taking any actions from the other machines, the complete hardware including drivers, receivers and cables must be tested. The test is performed as follows: A wrap is initiated from the operator console for the first line adapter. The wrap switch Type 1 at the DCE cable end must be switched to TEST position.
