Abstract

Disclosed is a potentiometer incorporating two sets of components in a molded case which provides a dual compact unit not easily damaged by flux and/or printed circuit board solvents. This design enables utilization of the less costly "open construction" versus the expensive "sealed construction" to build an instrument able to function under the operating conditions experienced in semiconductor manufacturing. Referring to Fig 1, the structure is a molded case 7 having terminal pins 1 molded into the base. A snap-fit cover 5 is used to securely close the opening into which the component parts are placed. This makes it possible to test the device prior to seal as well as salvage parts without difficulty. Wipers 4 attached to the rotor 3 contact the substrate 6.

The adjustment shaft 9 is equipped with external O-rings 8 and internal O-rings 2, which provide protection against damage from flux and solvents. By utilizing a dual substrate, it is possible to obtain apotentiometer with dual functions in the space normally required for a single-function device. As shown in Fig. 2, the substrate has a resistive element 10 and a conductive element 11 on one side with a duplicate configuration on the other side. A dual set of wipers 4 (Fig. 1) and an appropriate number of terminals provide the dual capabilities of the device.
