Abstract

This article describes a double byte character set (DBCS) checking audit operation for application generators. Information management system application development programs, such as IMSADF II, use an auditor routine to validate input data, perform application logic, and process application data. The auditor uses a symbol dictionary technique to decide which operations are to be performed on specified data. Fields in a user data base may be defined using a DBCS, such as the Japanese Kanji language. Fields designated as DBCS fields may only contain DBCS data. Fields designated as MIXED may contain either DBCS, EBCDIC data, or a mixture of both. The data manipulation of these types of fields are unique, and the user must be able to distinguish when DBCS data is to be used online.

The invention of a DBCS checking operation for the auditor, as shown in the diagram, resolves this problem. It allows the application program to determine whether a given field is defined as a DBCS field, or currently contains any DBCS data. This operation utilizes a Kanji tokenizer to interrogate MIXED fields for DBCS data.
