Abstract

This article describes a mechanism which provides alignment, adjustment, and synchronization for positive on-off switch action during testing of a personal computer (PC). In system testing of PCs it is necessary to provide positive on- off switch action of the power supply during test. Conventionally, a PC arrives at a test station via a plastic pallet carrier. A test head assembly is activated and moves forward to engage with the back of the PC chassis. Several compliants of different types are sequentially activated to provide specific test functions. Since accumulated tolerances of the pallet carrier and the PC vary considerably, it is of ultimate importance that the switch on-off compliant is accurately aligned to the power supply switch, providing positive on-off action, as required.

Since accumulated tolerances of the pallet carrier and the PC vary considerably, it is of ultimate importance that the switch on-off compliant is accurately aligned to the power supply switch, providing positive on-off action, as required. The compliant should be self-aligning to adjust to the pallet carrier and product dimensional changes. The mechanism disclosed herein is shown in the drawing in perspective view. Switch actuator 1 moves in all 3 axes to locate on the power supply switch and turn it on and off. Y axis cylinder 2 provides the Y axis movement of the switch actuator. X axis cylinder 3 provides the X axis movement to engage and retract the switch actuator. Stroke limit stops 4 limit the cylinder return stroke. Guide rod and support 5 secures the switch actuator on the Y coordinate plane. Plate switch mounting 6 has two microswitches secured thereto for support. Switches 7 determine the location of the switch actuator 1 on its Y coordinate plane and initiate cycle sequence.
