Abstract

Compliance is provided in four of the possible six degrees of freedom to facilitate precision assembly of elements with interacting surfaces. Device 1 (Fig. 1) comprises a portion 2 movable relative to a stationary portion 3. Movable portion 2 has affixed thereto a clamp 4 or other means for removably supporting a part 5 that is to be mated with a part 6. Part 5 has two spaced parallel pins 7a, 7b with chamfered ends that are to be inserted into bores 8a, 8b in part 6. As illustrated, device 1 (Fig. 2) comprises two mated assemblies 9, 10. Assembly 9 consists of a steel disk 11 with a convex spherical end surface 11'. A rubber spacer 12 is interposed radially between the outer periphery of disk 11 and the inner rim of a steel cup 13. Ball bearings 14 are retained within steel inner and outer cages 15, 16.
