Abstract

Compliance is provided in two of the possible six degrees of freedom to facilitate precision assembly of elements with interacting surfaces. Device 1 (Fig. 1) comprises a portion 2 movable relative to a stationary portion 3. Movable portion 2 has affixed thereto a clamp 4 or other means for removably supporting a part 5 that is to be mated with a part 6. As illustrated, part 5 has two spaced parallel pins 7a, 7b with chamfered ends that are to be inserted into bores 8a, 8b in part 6. More specifically, device 1 comprises two assemblies 9a, 9b (Fig. 2) secured in facing relation to opposite ends of stationary portion 3. Each assembly 9 comprises a rubber ring 10 and caged ball bearings 11 disposed between and in contact with facing surfaces of hardened inner and outer metallic disks 12, 13.

As illustrated, part 5 has two spaced parallel pins 7a, 7b with chamfered ends that are to be inserted into bores 8a, 8b in part 6. More specifically, device 1 comprises two assemblies 9a, 9b (Fig. 2) secured in facing relation to opposite ends of stationary portion 3. Each assembly 9 comprises a rubber ring 10 and caged ball bearings 11 disposed between and in contact with facing surfaces of hardened inner and outer metallic disks 12, 13. Assembly 9a is partially nested in a recess in the end of movable portion 2 adjacent stationary portion 3. Assemblies 9a, 9b are held in place by suitable means, such as a flanged bolt 14 and nut 15. Radial clearance at 16 between the bolt 14 and inner disk 12 of assembly 9a enables movable portion 2 to shift laterally in a plane at right angles to the axis of bolt 14 to accommodate slight misalignment during insertion of the chamfered pins 7a, 7b into their respective bores 8a, 8b.
