Abstract

In a computer system having online display or workstations, a keyword table is appended to an online document that allows the users to find keywords that are contained in the document. The keyword table contains synonyms that take the user to the same description. For example, Adjust, Adjusting, Paragraphs, Pagination, Paginating, etc., would all take the user to the same online information. A HELP TAG is inserted into the document by keying ".help(ADJUST)" into the document. A table is generated that has the keyword in it and the page and line number where that keyword exists. This table is generated at document resolution time when resolution and pagination is performed. The Online Help Facility is then programmed to go to the page and line number when the keyword was requested.

The user is prompted as follows: Type keyword or page number, Press Enter: So the user wouldn't have to learn any special techniques, this prompt was always displayed in the Online Help Facility. The subsequent searches in this table, which has several hundred entries, allows for subsecond searches, compared to the several minute searches of previous techniques. Because it is difficult always to have single word keywords, and there needs to be a limit on the size of the keywords for the table, the following algorithm is used: -Limit the keyword to 8 characters. -If the user keyed in two or more words, remove the blank(s) and make one keyword out of it. -...
