Abstract

A method is provided for enabling a user of a work station or display terminal connected to a computer system to generate a mass mailing that includes a customized report for each recipient of the mass mailing. This method solves the problem of having to generate one Query (a report or listing of some data) that is dependent on the outcome of the second Query (a list of people to get the report, based upon some criteria). The first Query application describes who is to get the mass mailing. This Query can have selection criteria associated with it, allowing the Query user to select all of the customers who sent in an order in the last week, for example. The second Query application describes what the report should be that is sent in the mass mailing.

This report may be a list of all customer's purchases that have been backordered and anticipated delivery dates. In this method, the results of both of these Queries will be printed from a single document. Additionally the results of one Query will be dependent on the results of the second Query. An example of such a dependent Query, as it appears in its source form in a document is as follows (the *& indicates a Query field):

(Image Omitted)

The first part of the document, namely, the customer name and address, are part of a multiple copy Query, that will generate a document for each person meeting the selection criteria, customers who have placed an order in the last week. The later part of the document contains a Query that is based...
