Automatic guided vehicle systems are used in factories for automatic routing and positioning. For example, pallet trucks and light load transporters are becoming more common. These vehicles are not only automatically guided but they can automatically load and unload themselves.

The robot vehicle is utilized to provide an enlarged degree of freedom of moving a robot mounted on a robot vehicle. The robot with the XYZ and other degrees of freedom has an expanded X or Y degree of freedom through the use of a robot vehicle. It is important that the robot be precisely positioned in the X and/or Y direction as it moves from a previously established position to a new remote position. This is accomplished by line gratings embedded at desired locations along the X axis path of the robot vehicle. At these locations, a second line grating would be embedded in the Y direction. The robot, not the robot vehicle, via an optical sensing system could linecount to establish its position, first in the X direction and then the Y direction. The line gratings in the X and Y directions are established in juxtaposition to a work station, a guiding station, a machine tool, etc. This extension of the degree of freedom of the robot allows it to be used for parts storage, parts movement, the manufacturing process and test and inspection prior to movement of the part or material to the customer.
