Abstract

In an article classification apparatus in which a plurality of articles are serially fed from a stacker into respective destination boxes through several functional units, a unit-controller is provided in each functional unit and control information of "data-packet" is produced corresponding to each article being fed which contains characteristic information of the article, such as its destination address, size, status data, etc., and is successively transmitted from unit-controller to unit-controller in synchronization with the feeding of the associated article to make the unit-controller control the unit on the basis of the information read from the data-packet, so that each of the successive articles being fed can be controlled independently at the functional unit.

In an article classification apparatus in which a plurality of articles are serially fed from a stacker into respective destination boxes through several functional units, a unit-controller is provided in each functional unit and control information of "data-packet" is produced corresponding to each article being fed which contains characteristic information of the article, such as its destination address, size, status data, etc., and is successively transmitted from unit-controller to unit- controller in synchronization with the feeding of the associated article to make the unit-controller control the unit on the basis of the information read from the data- packet, so that each of the successive articles being fed can be controlled independently at the functional unit. This feed control system can be applied to a postcard classification apparatus operated as follows: 1. At the initial condition, a master controller (MC) provides a feed command to a unit-controller UC1 for a stacker, so that the UC1 can make the stacker feed out the postcard one by one therefrom and can transmit a data-packet to the next unit-controller UC2 for a zip-code reader synchronizing with the feed-out operation. 2. The UC2 makes the reader read a zip-code on the postcard supplied and adds the read information to a field in the data-packet and also a readability flag indicating whether the zip-code on the postcard could be read or not.
