Optical Disk Cartridge

A cartridge for optical disks is described which provides protection against contamination in handling, affords easy inser and registration in the disk drive and snaps apart readily to allow use in the drive and cleaning of the optical disk outside the drive.

Cartridge 10 (Figs. 1 and 2) is composed of two symmetrical horizontal halves 11 which enclose optical disk 12 through the action of four magnets 13 located essentially in the corners of the cartridge. Slots 14 allow cartridge 10 to be keyed into the drive mechanism for location. Additional slots 15 are used to open cartridge 10 within the drive to allow axial and radial runout clearance from the optical disk. Slots 16 allow opening of the cartridge (for example, with a coin) for cleaning when the cartridge is not in the drive mechanism.
