Abstract

A tension-measuring device is provided which includes a linear displacement transducer adapted to sense radial information of a compliant member. A digital readout is coupled to the transducer to give an indication of the amount of radial compressive force sensed by the tension measuring device. Conventional wiring harnesses are constructed by employing tie wraps to hold the wires of the harness together at selected points. Typically, such tie wraps are applied to the harness with a tie wrap gun which is capable of applying a tie wrap with varying degrees of tightness. The present tension measuring device provides a way to measure the amount of radial compressive force exerted by a tie wrap installed with a tie wrap gun.

A tension-measuring device is provided which includes a linear displacement transducer adapted to sense radial information of a compliant member. The present tension measuring device provides a way to measure the amount of radial compressive force exerted by a tie wrap installed with a tie wrap gun. Thus, the measuring device makes it possible to calibrate a plurality of tie wrap guns to install tie wraps which exhibit substantially the same radial compressive force level. As seen in Fig. 1, the present measuring device includes a split tube capable of being radially displaced by the radial tension caused by a tie wrap situated thereon. A displacement transducer such as a linear variable displacement transducer (LVDT) is attached to the split tube in a manner such that the transducer generates an output signal of appropriate magnitude when the split tube is subjected to radial compressive force.
