Abstract

Liquid crystal compositions consisting of chiral smectic C phase (SmC*) materials were prepared with seven compounds selected from the following three groups of structural formula. (Image Omitted) R1 - R3 are alkyl radicals, and R* represents radicals having photo-active asymmetric carbon atoms, such as 2-methylbutyl radicals, 1-methylheptyl radicals, 1-methylbutyl radicals and 1-methylpropyl radicals. A mixture of the following seven compounds realized a lowered (<-13 C) temperature of transition from crystal to SmC* phase in the eutectic crystal state. (Image Omitted)
