Abstract

This article describes the composition of a conformal coat to assist in the transfer of heat from a heat-generating electrical component to the surface of a multilayer board and then to a heat sink, and a method of applying the coat. The coat is composed of URALANE* 5750 - polyurethane conformal coating to which toluene (35 parts by weight) is added. An automatic meter mix and spray system is used to apply a uniform coat under the component. The application of a uniform coating is assisted by the use of a vacuum system to force URALANE, under components. The vacuum cycle uses a series of pressure evacuations (28 inches of mercury) which are followed by a slow release to atmospheric pressure.

Semi-Automatic Conformal Coat/Enhanced Thermal Transfer Process

The process requires environmental control of room temperature at 75 Å 3OEF and relative humidity of 45 Å 5% to ensure constant material properties and undesirable reactions with URALANE, and to provide protection from electrostatic discharge. As seen in the flow chart, after spray application and vacuum the coated assembly undergoes air dry and oven cure. * Trademark of Furane Products Co.
