Normally used drill smear test techniques involve destructive testing. The technique described below allows one to test for drill smear without damaging the printed circuit board.

The amount of drill smear in a hole can be determined by inserting a probe into the hole and measuring the capacitance between the probe and the copper planes in the board. The change in capacitance would indicate the amount of smear in the thru- hole.
