A Glass Overcoat for Reversible Optical Discs

An overcoat for reversible optical discs is described which comprises a thin film glass overcoat.

A thin film glass overcoat substantially improves the ablation resistance and the number of write-erase cycles of an optical recording medium of the phase change type.

In a specific embodiment, Te and (Te Ge)85 Sn15 films at ~ 100OEC were overcoated with about 200nm thick films deposited in a conventional diode sputtering system from a 7059 glass target with a mixture of 90% Ar and 10% O2
. With the 7059 glass overcoat, a factor of 3-5 higher ablation threshold and greater 103 times more write-erase cycles were observed.
