A Blasting Template Used for Masking Around a Designated Surface to Be Conditioned

A blasting template used to protect selected areas of a part from the blast materials is itself subject to excessive and repeated wear during the blasting process. To provide additional abrasion resistance, a polyurethane surfaced template is provided by molding polyurethane over a stiffened plate.

As shown in the figures, a stiffener plate or aluminum template 5 has the surface roughened to enhance adhesion. An intermediate adhesive coating is applied to the stiffener plate and the plate is fixed in a mold cavity. The mold cavity has the stiffener plate positioned and secured therein and provides the final dimensions of the template, allowing the polyurethane coating material to cover the surfaces defining the openings in plate 5. Thereafter, a polyurethane resin is introduced into the mold and cured about the stiffener plate to form the completed template to the final dimensions.

In the Figs. 1 and 2, the blasting template is shown with the polyurethane coating 6 overlying the metal stiffener plate 5. In the plan view of Fig. 1, the interior dotted line portions indicate the slightly smaller dimensions of the stiffener that permits a layer of polyurethane to cover the walls defining the aperture portions.
