Abstract

This article describes a screw fastener which can be installed without using tools. Referring to the drawing, the fastener includes a threaded, hex-head bolt 10 and a break-away key handle 12 connected to screw 10 through a tapered boss 14. The screw 10, handle 12 and boss 14 should be machined in a single operation and thus are initially integral with each other. The ha 12 is used to install the screw 10. At a predetermined torque, the handle 10 will break away from the screw head at the smallest point on the boss 12. The handle and boss can then be discarded.

Screw Fastener Installable Without Tools

This article describes a screw fastener which can be installed without using tools. Referring to the drawing, the fastener includes a threaded, hex-head bolt 10 and a break-away key handle 12 connected to screw 10 through a tapered boss 14. The screw 10, handle 12 and boss 14 should be machined in a single operation and thus are initially integral with each other. The ha 12 is used to install the screw 10. At a predetermined torque, the handle 10 will break away from the screw head at the smallest point on the boss 12. The handle and boss can then be discarded.

The screw head is preferably hex-shaped so that the screw can be removed using a nut driver or wrench.
