Abstract

A technique is described whereby two or more power supplies are connected in parallel so as to supply current to a single load. Rectifiers are used in such a way so as to isolate the power supplies from each other, enabling any one of the power supplies to be turned on or off without affecting the operation of the remaining power supplies. This concept not only improves the overall reliability of systems connected to the power supplies, but provides the ability of replacing a defective power supply without encountering machine down time. In addition, since each power supply is supplying only a fraction of the load current during normal operation, there is less stress on the components used in the power supplies.

A technique is described whereby two or more power supplies are connected in parallel so as to supply current to a single load. Rectifiers are used in such a way so as to isolate the power supplies from each other, enabling any one of the power supplies to be turned on or off without affecting the operation of the remaining power supplies. In addition, since each power supply is supplying only a fraction of the load current during normal operation, there is less stress on the components used in the power supplies. The use of the rectifiers for a two power supply system supplying direct current to a single load is shown in the figure. Rectifiers CR1 and CR3 cathodes are connected to the positive load, and the nodes of CR2 and CR4 are connected to the negative load. The rectifiers provide the required isolation with the only interconnection between the power supplies and the load occurring at the return line. It is understood that in addition to the use of the rectifiers, additional circuitry may be desirable to insure proper current sharing.
