Dynamic Display of Function Keys

A method is described to dynamically display the function keys across the bottom of the screen and only display those which are valid at a specific point in time.

An application program provides a variety of functions available to the user at different instances in the execution of the program. Function keys are used to access these functions. Some of the functions do not necessarily apply to all areas of the system at all times, while other functions are constant throughout the system. Showing functions that are not active at a particular instant in the program may be confusing to the user as the user needs to know only those functions that apply to the current task that is being executed.

In accordance with the new method, if the user is in doubt about which keys are available, a simple glance at the bottom of the display will provide sufficient information to continue the task.
