Abstract

In normal word processing operations utilizing an electronic typewriter having the capability of storing documents in identifiable and recallable segments of memory, a number identifier of the active document, the number of bytes of storage used by the active document, and the number of bytes remaining unused in the document storage area are displayed when an operator activates selected keys. When the operator keys "code + x" on an electronic typewriter having a memory with a plurality of active documents, the display of the typewriter shows the numeric identifier of the active document, the number of bytes of storage used by the active document, and the number of bytes remaining unused in the document storage area. When the code key is released, the display returns to the prior information that it was displaying.
