Abstract

Provision is made for the key operator to disable nonessential copier functions (i.e., document feeder, stapler, reduction, etc.), and yet allow all essential and other nonessential copier features to be used, while awaiting the arrival of service personnel. If a subsequent user selects a disabled function, a cathode ray tube (CRT) prompt informs the user that the function has been disabled, and provides directions to the user to assist in the use of the partially disabled copier. Disabling a feature reduces the number of phone calls a Key Operator may receive while waiting for repair, and at the same time improves the perceived availability of the copier to the general user population. The ability to disable nonessential copier features eliminates the need to place a "COPIER DOWN/SERVICE CALLED" note on the machine.

COPIER FEATURE Control

In addition, some owners may find it convenient to disallow certain features in order to control copier usage. In this case, the unwanted features can be disabled. The ability to lockout all users allows the machine to be effectively disabled without shutting power off, which in turn allows the copier to remain warmed up and ready to copy as soon as lockout is ended. Only a Key Operator is allowed access to the copier's Key Operator Functions.

This is enforced by requiring a unique keybutton sign-on when Key Operator Functions is selected by a user from a main CRT menu (not shown). Once access is granted to the Key Operator Functions, the Key Operator may perform any or all Key Operator Functions. The following CRT menu screen is displayed upon entry to the Key Operator Functions mode. KEY OPERATOR FUNCTIONS 1 Change Special Job Setups

All settings controlled by the above Key Operator Functions menu are stored in nonvolatile memory (CMOS). The following CRT screen is displayed when the Key Operator selects Limited Function Messages option from the above Key Operator Functions menu. This is done by pressing the control panel's numeric button "3". LIMITED FUNCTION MESSAGES
