Abstract

A method is described for use in a word processor, which allows another document to be inserted as part of the printed output when a document is printed. The IBM Writing Assistant word processing program allows a document to be joined at print time, but does not support imbedded formats within the joined document -- the joined document must always assume the format of the printed document. The IBM DisplayWrite 3 word processing program allows a document to be joined during a Merge File with Document Task, but this requires that the document be processed (adjusted/paginated) by text before beginning the actual printing. The intermediate document (taking up disk space equal to the sum of the original documents) must be stored on disk during the process. The new method provides a means of joining a document at print time.

The new method provides a means of joining a document at print time. Formatting of the joined document is controlled by the type of formatting controls found in the joined document: 1. If the joined document has no formatting controls, the text

will be formatted according to the current format in the

document being printed when the joined document instruction is

encountered. This includes the following attributes:

- top/bottom margin

- page length/width

- left/right margin

- right justify

- line spacing

- pitch (character spacing)

- emphasis (bold, underline, superscript, subscript or color)

The document will be correctly paginated when the...
