Double-lined Sump for Chemicals

The double-lined sump is described which provides a high reliability sump for chemical storage/use areas located in environmentally sensitive areas. This design is easy to remove install, easy to inspect, and provides continuous monitoring of the double-walled vessel integrity.

Industrial chemical storage and use areas require provisions to confine chemical spills to minimize health, safety and environmental endangerment. Chemical spill containment areas usually have at least one sump, located at the lowest point in the area. The integrity of this sump is critical because it frequently contains some liquid even after the sump is pumped out. A heel of liquid in a faulty sump could cause a significant groundwater contamination problem.

This sump should be a small vessel, but be large enough to accommodate a level alarm probe and a suction line for a pump. The small size reduces cost, makes inspection easier, and makes installation and removal easier. The pump should be sized to prevent an overflow condition, based on the liquid volume most likely to be spilled over an assumed time period.

The double sump, shown in the figure, is prefabricated and tested. Although stainless steel is preferable, any metal or plastic can be used. For corrosive service, the inner tank can be painted, coated, or rubber lined as required.
