A magnetic head is described which comprises a modification to a ring type head to improve its ability to write on a vertical recording medium, while retaining the superior readback capabilities of the ring head.

The magnetic head comprises a ring type magnetic head in which one (and only one) side of the gap 1 of a ferrite ring head is coated with a high-moment material 2 like sendust. During the write process, the low-moment ferrite 3 saturates at the corner, essentially producing a wide-gap structure, with the result that the field amplitude inside the medium is enhanced. The high- moment material 2 is on the trailing edge of the gap 1 so that the field gradient is optimal.

During readback, the head is not saturated, and retains its normal narrow- gap resolution capability. It can be shown that, for an 1100-G material coated on Ni-Zn ferrite with a 0.25 mm gap, the vertical field amplitude at a depth of 0.4 mm is increased by 70% over that produced by a standard 1100-G head. effect, this allows a higher disk coercivity to be used, which results in higher signal output.
