Surface Mounted Pivoting Card Edge Connector

A technique is described whereby a surface mounted pivoting card edge connector allows an auxiliary circuit board to be plugged into a surface mounted connector, and then pivoted into a position where height limitations exist.

In prior art, multiple plated through holes in the main circuit board were needed to mount the connector for an auxiliary circuit board. The technique described herein provides a method of mounting an auxiliary circuit card where height limitation exists and eliminates the need to provide plated through holes in the main circuit board for mounting the connector. The concept is unique in that the auxiliary circuit board may be inserted vertically, then pivoted into position horizontally.

Card edge connector 10, as shown in the figure, is mounted to connector bracket 11 enabling connector 10 to swivel about pivot 12. Connector bracket 11 may be fastened to a main circuit board 13 with a fast cure adhesive or through the use of other fastening devices. Flexible cable 14 is an integral part of connector 10 and is connected to contacts 15 of the connector. opposite end of flexible cable 14 is surface mounted at 16 to circuit board 13. A minimum distance 17 must be maintained so as to prevent damage to flexible cable 14.
