Abstract

Deformable materials are used for isostatic or partly isostatic lamination of green ceramic sheets. To build up sufficient lamination pressure the materials must be prevented from expanding or leaving through any gaps in the tool. The tool to achieve a high isostatic pressure comprises a conically bored piston and a cylinder, as shown in 1. The thin part of the piston wall is flexible and presses against the wall of the cylinder as the pressure on the piston increases. The gap between the piston and cylinder is closed before the deformable material can expand into the gap. The gap is less than .5 mil. As the medium, a gelled polyvinylchloride can be used. Under high pressure this material has the attributes of a high viscous fluid. The tool can be heated before or after application of pressure.
