Abstract

Automatic font changing and impression control is provided for the production of output copy printed from data code input supplied from input tape to automatic composing equipment. Upon the occurrence of a code, such as f1, f2, f3, etc., read by the record reader, the printer control computer, which is also receiving text character input from the record reader, causes the printer to stop printing and moves the print head to the extreme left margin. The font is replaced by the action of the font changer, and the print head is returned to the position where printing ceased. Printing again resumes with the replaced font at an impression control preselected by the operator upon loading the font changer. Font changes can also be effected by the operator making a panel entry anytime during the printing operation.

The font changing apparatus used is one which is fastened to the left side of the frame of a typewriter and is capable of being swung away. This apparatus comprises five font storing cylinders arranged on a carrousel which rotates and detents in any of five positions to center one of the cylinders over the printer carrier for pickup or placement of a type element on the carrier.

The automatic composing machine used is one in which data is placed in the machine as a sequence of codes, one code for each character of text and several codes in pre-established sequence...
