Abstract

An improved direct reading surfactometer for metal etchants is made on a principle similar to a hydrometer wherein a reactive body to be immersed is equipped with an indicator member sticking above the surface of the liquid. Operation is essentially that of a specific gravity hydrometer in that a reactive metal surface on the body consistent with the metal/etchant system under study clads a portion of the exterior of the body so that the apparent density of the body is indicated by the liquid level on the indicator member. In turn this indication is a measure of the efficiency of the wetting agent in the solution as manifested by the steady state thickness of an adherent bubble layer on the reactive member.
