A format storage and retrieval system for an automatic typewriter enables formats to be readily entered into a storage unit for subsequent selective recall in order to control the printing of tabular work.

Tab rack 11 is cleared and set manually by the operator. Storage of the thus set tabular positions is initiated by placing mode control 13 in a record mode which effects a carrier return under control of carrier return control 15. Carrier 17 is escaped and controlled by escapement control 19 which effects rotation of lead screw 21. Each increment of rotation of lead screw 21 is sensed by photoemitter assembly 23 which provides a signal to escapement counter 25 indicating the escapement position of carrier 17. Tab sensor 27 located on carrier 17 senses each set tab position on tab rack 11 and provides a gating signal to AND gate 29 which gates the contents of escapement counter 25 to tab stop memory 31. Mode control 13 is reset when carrier 17 reaches the right- most position of a line. A plurality of tab formats can be thus stored in tab stop memory, each such set being assigned a different tab format number.

When it is desirous to print-out a document with a given stored format, the format number is selected and the mode control 13 is placed in a format set mode.
