Measurement of Head To Tape Spacing

Dynamic measurement of the spacing between a moving strip of magnetic tape 1 and a transparent model 2 of a magnetic recorder read/write head is performed by an interferometer apparatus utilizing white light and a color camera or color TV screen.

White light source 3 is collected by lens 4 and focused on mirror 5. The light then passes through lens 6 and is reflected through the head model 2 by means of mirror 7. Tape 1 reflects the light. The reflected light contains an interference pattern as determined by the head-to-tape spacing.

This interference pattern is recorded in color by camera 8 which contains color film. The head-to-tape spacing can be unambiguously determined by using a Newton's ring color chart while observing the color photograph obtained from the camera.
