Pneumatic Reel Latch

This reel latch allows the magnetic tape unit operator to place a reel of tape 1 on drive hub 2, and then push the load button, whereupon the tape unit air pressure source automatically activates the latch.

The reel is positioned by a number of spring-loaded catches 3. The drive hub includes stationary walls 4 and 5 and an intermediate movable wall 6. The space between walls 4 and 6 is exposed to ambient air pressure. Spring 7 biases the movable wall toward wall 5. The closed space 8 between walls 5 and 6 is connected to the pressure source. Wall 6 carries a number of inclined surfaces
9. These surfaces expand a split ring which carries rubber ring 10. When expanded, the rubber ring firmly holds the reel on the drive hub.

Space 8 communicates with the source of air pressure through a number of openings 11, the hollow shaft 12 of the reel drive motor, and a fixed-position plenum chamber 13.
