Abstract

This machine provides for the evaluation of discrete interconnections on printed circuits and provides continuous monitoring and failure analysis. A table 10 carries a work piece 12 which is a substrate on which the discrete interconnections are to be bonded. An automatic wire feed is provided to deliver a wire 14 from a feed spool 16 to a take-up spool 17 and position the wire under a bonding unit 18. A shuttle arm 20 is positioned to break the wire after bonding for a bond test. The arm is equipped with a strain gauge feeding a peak voltage sensor which via a coupler records the ultimate tensile strength of the connection on a unit record card for statistical analysis.

Flexible fiber optics 22 are utilized in conjunction with appropriate lens system 24 to transmit to a closed circuit television system and record on a video tape the continuous monitoring of the wire feed, and positioning of the bonding tip to the wire, during and after bonding and testing.

The welding work station assembly has the ability to position the table 10 under control of a single stepping motor 26 through an appropriate gear mechanism. The rotation of the table, the raising of the table, and the lowering of the table is accomplished from the single stepping motor by means of gearing.
