Abstract

A gapless magnetic reading head is easy to manufacture and is insensitive to both frequency and tape speed. Magnetic flux lines from a dipole on magnetic tape transverse a sensing coil wound around magnetic material to complete a magnetic circuit across a large air gap. The usual number of critical dimensions found in a magnetic head are reduced, and the difficult-to-produce magnetic gap is eliminated. A single sharp corner is transversed by the magnetic tape generating electrical signals as a function of the magnetic flux lines cut as the magnetic tape moves past the corner.

Version A is constructed by removing one-half of the magnetic circuit of a conventional head to leave a magnetic element with one sharp corner. Version B increase; efficiency by reducing the gap size.
