These switch assemblies monitor motion of devices 10, such as punches, that operate on very close centerline distances, such as, for example 0.087 inch.

The upper switch assembly comprises a holder 12, a ribbon type printed circuit board 14 that is copper clad and provides position-to-position discreteness of electrical contacts and is bonded to holder 12, a nonconductive spacer 16, a combed contact spring 18 which is biased away from circuit board 14 and is the circuit common, a polyurethane rubber sheet 20 which is bonded to holder 12 and to contact spring 18 providing a hermetic seal that protects the contacts from contaminants, a comb type spring lever 22 which is biased toward contact spring 18 and circuit board 14, and a clamp nut strap 24 for holding the parts together. When punch 10 just touches spring lever 22 or is out of contact therewith, spring lever 22 holds contact spring 18 firmly against circuit board 14 to make electrical contact. When punch 10 moves upwardly, it moves spring lever 22 upwardly, thereby allowing contact spring 18 to move away from circuit board 14, this being the open circuit OFF condition. Contact spring 18 is preloaded upwardly and spring lever 22 is preloaded downwardly, thereby providing dampening to prevent contact bounce.
