Tabulation System

A system is disclosed for effecting tabular operations, determining the location of set tabs, and for providing a justification computer with information regarding the exact distance travelled by the carrier during the execution of a tab operation.

Carrier 19 bearing print element 17 is mechanically coupled to lead-screw 27 the rotation of which causes carrier escapement is controlled through magnet 23 by printer control 15. The position of the carrier is designated by the emitter spoke 4 and the following feed-back signals are provided by the printer mechanism: (1) "home" which corresponds to each possible tab stop location directed over line 1 and obtained from sensor 29 sensing home emitter spoke 2,
(2) "emitter" along line 3 obtained from sensor 29 sensing an emitter spoke 4 (each pulse corresponding to one unit of escapement), and (3) "tab stop sense" along line 5 obtained from tab stop sensor 21 sensing when the carrier is near a set tab stop by belt 6 movable synchronously about pulleys 7 with escapement of carrier 19.

A "tab code" read by record reader 8 and decoded by tab decode 9 will encode a space to printer control 15 through encode 13, and printer control 15 will initiate carrier escapement with counter 12 counting the units of escapement. Thereafter, the tab decode along line 10 will stop carrier escapement through stop mechanism 25 after the approach of a set tab is sensed by sensor 21, and upon the occurrence of a home signal al...
