Character Print Mechanism

The described apparatus is directed to a print carrying drum and mechanism for rotating the drum in one of three tilt positions for accessing a selected character to a print position for on-the-fly printing.

Print carrying drum 30 has three flat portions 40, 42, and 44. Upon the flats on the periphery of the drum are situated three rows of characters. Timing belt 2 drives drum 10 from square shaft 6 which is rotating at a constant speed. Belt 2 is carried by pulleys 4 and 8. Drum 10 is pivoted at pins 22, 24 to the main carrier 20 through subcarrier 18. The tilt control is provided by cam 70, which rotates about shaft 68 as armature 66 is held in one of three positions by magnet 60, magnet 62, or centering pin 64. Cam 70 rides in slot 72 of subcarrier 18.

Shaft 16 is fixedly attached to subcarrier 18. Drum 10 is mounted for rotation about shaft 16 by bearings 12, 14. Print carrying drum 30 is fixedly attached to drum 10 by thumbscrew 32 and washer 34. Screw 50 is selectively rotated to increment carrier 20 along the print line. Simultaneously with the incrementing, cam 70 is actuated to tilt the drum 30 to present the flat 40, 42, or 44, carrying the next character to be printed, at the print position. Hammer 80 is fired for on-the-fly printing of the selected character on paper 90.
