Ultrasonic Bonding Tool

An auxiliary tip can be attached to a conventional ultrasonic bonding tool to change the usual tip motion by 90 degrees to facilitate use in confined spaces.

A standard transducer stack 1, with energizing winding 2, is fitted with intensifying horn 3 which has chisel point 4. The transducer assembly is attached at a node point 5 to a support member 6 by clamp 7. Support 6 has reduced cross section 8 between the main body and tip 9. Link 10 secures the tip to point 4.

Upon energization, the horizontal movement of point 4 transmitted through link 10, flexes tip 9 vertically since reduced cross section 8 acts as a pivot. The edges of point 4 are relieved to avoid interference with link 10 during movement.
